MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN / RankWire.AI / – India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal is in the United States for the G20 Trade Ministers’ Meeting and bilateral trade talks. The ministerial runs in Milwaukee on September 30 and October 1. India’s Commerce Ministry said Goyal will also meet his U.S. counterpart during the visit. The discussions will address the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement and work toward finalising an interim trade deal based on the February 2026 joint framework.
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer is hosting the G20 gathering, which brings together trade ministers from the group’s member economies. The official agenda covers forced labour in global supply chains and structural excess production capacity. Ministers will also discuss the Most-Favoured-Nation principle and trade restrictions involving food. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative has scheduled ministerial sessions across both days, alongside meetings and industry-related events in Milwaukee.
India said it will use the meeting to support an open, transparent and non-discriminatory multilateral trading system with the World Trade Organization at its core. The government also stressed the need for policy space for developing economies. Goyal plans bilateral meetings with other participating ministers on the sidelines. India said those engagements will cover opportunities for farmers, fishermen, women entrepreneurs, startups, small businesses and other enterprises involved in domestic and international trade.
Trade pact talks return to focus
The India-U.S. trade discussions build on a joint framework announced in February for an interim agreement on reciprocal and mutually beneficial trade. That framework reaffirmed negotiations on a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement. It also outlined tariff and market-access commitments covering industrial goods and a range of agricultural products. Other areas included medical devices, information and communications technology, standards and supply-chain cooperation. Both governments have continued work on finalising the interim agreement within the broader bilateral negotiations.
Goyal’s U.S. visit runs from September 29 through October 5 and includes engagements beyond the G20 meeting. He plans meetings with business executives and investors in Milwaukee and Chicago. The sectors represented include manufacturing, consumer goods, agribusiness, retail and technology. His schedule also includes roundtables with startups and other companies. In Chicago, the minister will meet professional associations representing the Indian community and take part in scheduled commemorative events during the visit.
G20 agenda spans supply chains and capacity
The Milwaukee programme includes a Global Forum on Steel Excess Capacity ministerial on September 30. G20 ministers are also scheduled to tour a Rockwell Automation facility before the formal opening session later that day. Further ministerial sessions will take place on October 1. The United States holds the G20 presidency in 2026. U.S. officials have placed forced labour, excess capacity, food trade and the Most-Favoured-Nation principle among the main subjects for discussion at the trade gathering.
India and the United States launched negotiations for the broader bilateral trade agreement in February 2025. The February 2026 framework kept those talks active while setting out the basis for an interim arrangement. Goyal’s Milwaukee discussions form part of that continuing process. His meetings with the U.S. side will focus on advancing the bilateral agreement and completing the interim deal described in the joint framework. The G20 programme will continue through October 1, while Goyal’s wider U.S. visit continues through October 5.
